IR Thermography relies on principles of thermal capacitance to measure differences in radiant heat.  During the course of a day, energy from the sun is absorbed by roofing material.  Since wet insulation has a higher thermal mass than dry, it takes longer for wet insulation to release the energy absorbed during the course of the day.  After nightfall, these differences in thermal mass can be detected by temperature differences as the heat is dissipated.

IR Thermography lends itself to money savings when it comes to roof diagnostics.  The scope of damage from unseen roof leaks can be quantified in a non-destructive, low cost manner.  In cases that previously would have demanded complete roof replacement, thermal scanning can help limit the job to just the problem area.
